Humidity can kill!

I must admit that I am a sweaty man. When I got to Hidaka School today, I was dripping and had no handkerchief to catch my oozing body fluids. Fortunately, I was allowed to turn on the air-conditioner. If this is only the beginning of the infamous humid summer in Toyooka, it could be a very long summer…

今週のGrammar – 05: Were you born in a tent?

今週はエアレン(Aaron)先生から習った、ニュージーランドで使わている表現を紹介します。
直訳すると、「おまえはテントで生まれたのか～!?」と言う意味になりますが、扉を開けっ放しにしている時に親や先生からよく注意された表現だそうです。

アメリカでは、’Were you born in a barn?’ – 「おまえは家畜小屋で生まれたのか？」という表現になります。もし日本語で使うとするならば、「おまえはかまくらで生まれたのか？」という表現になるでしょう。

この表現は当たり前のことができなかったことを指摘するときにも使用できます。
例えばトイレの水を流し忘れたり、電気を付けっぱなしにした時の「ツッコミ」感覚で使ったりすることもできるでしょう。

I’m happy to announce a cooking event which is happening on the 6ht of July. We are going to cook up some Mexican Food, called Fajitas. Hope many of you can make it!

Having lived in Honduras for a while, I hope that I can make some nice authentic cuisine.

GoのEnglishしゃべらーや!!

I have started a radio show earlier this evening on Jungle FM (76.4). I was too shy to advertise it on this blog, but now that it’s in the air literally, please do not be surprised by the level of my Japanese (or the lack of…). I never thought of myself as a radio DJ, but I am truly enjoying the thrill of sharing my experience abroad. I would love to get some feedback, so please feel free to send me comments to school or to me directly in class.

Oh, for those of you who missed it, it’s going to be on air every Friday around 5:40pm.

News feed: Plans for Earthquake warning system (BBC News)

‘Researchers say they have found a close link between electrical disturbances on the edge of our atmosphere and impending quakes on the ground below’

According to Nasa scientists, there is a change in the atmosphere before an earthquake occurs. They even detected this change before the big earthquake in China in May. It may be possible that in the future, there will be a satellite just to predict when the next earthquake will occur.

and that would be plain awesome...

Mike has arrived!!!

Sorry for not posting anything yesterday. I had to help Mike move in to his new apartment, have a welcome party, escort him back, and unpack more to finish off the day (around 2330). He will be observing all lesson in Toyooka, and Friday’s lesson in Hidaka with me.

From next week, he will be doing illustrations for the grammar / expression weekly blog =)

今週のGrammar – 04: ‘too big for one’s boots’

日常生活のなかで、人間関係の揉め事はしょっちゅうあることです。
今週は驕り高ぶる人間の表現の仕方を紹介したいと思います。

高校時代に学級院長になったクラスメートが周りの人間をを見下し、指図するようになった時、僕たちは陰で、「あいつは何様のつもりなんや！」と、グチっていました。それを英語に訳すと：

He is being too big for his boots. – 彼は自分のブーツより大きくなりすぎている。

与えられた役目や位（ブーツ）よりも大きくなるという意味です。
英語でも日本語と一緒で、批判的な表現が沢山ありますが、ここでは書けない物がほとんどです。(笑)
