今週のGrammar 08: Open a can of worms

‘Open a can of worms’ –

Obama opens a can of worms’ という記事が載るほど使われる表現です。
http://www.suntimes.com/news/mitchell/923055,CST-NWS-mitch30.article

When I joined this society for the sake of ‘being nice’ to a guy I hardly know, little did I realize that I was opening a can of worms; it consisted of having to help out events for the whole year.

News Feed: Counting Whales: A Fluky Business (BBC News)

Fluky –

‘ray, a drop of golden sun’

Deep Mountain Stag Beetle

Deep mountain – 山奥
Stag –
Beetle –

Doe, a deer, a female deer –

Grammar – 07: Water off a duck’s back

’Water off a duck’s back’ – 鴨の背中から弾かれる水

Scenario: Two young office workers (from Tokyo) having a conversation at work:

Aさん:Don’t you get upset when your boss tells you off like that?
Not really.
Aさん:Amazing! How did you become so strong?
I don’t know. I just let it roll off like water off a duck’s back.

In India

When I was in India I lived in McLeod Ganj, a small mountain town in Dharamsala. McLeod Ganj is located on the foothills of the Himalayas, and so you must go high into the mountains to get there. I lived there for five months. I taught classes on reading and conversation. Most of my students were Tibetan refugees, but I also had students from India, Nepal, Thailand, Bhutan, Mongolia and one pilgrim from Japan. Dharamsala is a very beautiful countryside. Every morning I would see mongooses playing or monkeys fighting.

My Family History

My grandfather was the son of an Irish immigrant. He grew up in a poor family, he was the only member of his family to go to high school. When he was very young his mother died. His step mother was very cruel, so when he was 16 he ran away from home and stowed away on a ship. He grew up on the open sea and became a sea captain and saw the world. In South America he went to Argentina where he met my grand mother. My grand mother was working as an English teacher. The fell in love and married soon after. They bought a ship and planned to fight pirates and smuggle emeralds from South America into the US. But then they had a daughter, my mother, and decided that a life of pirates and jewels was no way to raise a child. They sold the ship and bought a small blue berry farm in Maine.

About Me

I was born in Concord, Massachusetts. Concord is one of the oldest cities in America, and the site of many historic battles during the Revolutionary War. I grew up on a blue berry and sugar maple farm in Maine. My grandfather and grandmother used to farm blue berries and maple syrup, but today it is just a small blue berry field. After high school, I studied in many places. First I studied art and animation in Georgia. After that, I visited Japan for the first time to study Japanese art. Then I went to India to study teaching and philosophy. Finally, I returned to America to study language and art history at Evergreen College in Washington.

<ルール>

<例>

GREEN LADY

News Feed: ‘Non-planet’ Pluto gets new class (BBC News)

Although a new category was given, some people are still angry about the declassification two years ago. According to BBC, one man was heard commenting,

‘Plutoids or haemorrhoids, whatever they call it. This is irrelevant’

I you don’t know what haemorrhoids are, it’s worth looking up. =D

今週のGrammar – 06: Walking on thin ice

You are walking on thin ice, young man!’、「これ以上教室を乱したら、すごいことになるわよ!」

Were you born in a tent?’

Sports Day

Since I didn’t have to invigilate Eiken exams in the morning, I participated in the district sports day. I ran a relay where you have to place a ball between you and your partner. Unfortunately, the ball kept slipping and the progress was slow. Our team ended 4th out of 6 teams. I need more ‘spare tires’ around my waist to secure the ball next year.

News feed: Cuba to abandon salary equality (BBC News)

Since Raul Castro took over his brother, Fidel Castro, he has brought in changes such as allowing mobile phones and computers. Now, he has allowed ‘bonuses’ for high performance of workers. This is a significant move away from the traditional way of communism since the revolution in 1959.

Is this a conformism to globalisation or it is a step toward freedom?

Only time will tell…

‘Mama-san’ Volleyball

Since Wednesday is the only I finish early (i.e. 7pm), I have started to play ‘mama-san’ volleyball at Toyooka elementary school. Being made of skin and bones (plus excess fat in recent months), it’s a good match up for highly experienced ladies. Can’t wait to play beach volleyball in the summer…

Humidity can kill!

I must admit that I am a sweaty man. When I got to Hidaka School today, I was dripping and had no handkerchief to catch my oozing body fluids. Fortunately, I was allowed to turn on the air-conditioner. If this is only the beginning of the infamous humid summer in Toyooka, it could be a very long summer…

今週のGrammar – 05: Were you born in a tent?

Were you born in a barn?’

I have started a radio show earlier this evening on Jungle FM (76.4). I was too shy to advertise it on this blog, but now that it’s in the air literally, please do not be surprised by the level of my Japanese (or the lack of…). I never thought of myself as a radio DJ, but I am truly enjoying the thrill of sharing my experience abroad. I would love to get some feedback, so please feel free to send me comments to school or to me directly in class.

Oh, for those of you who missed it, it’s going to be on air every Friday around 5:40pm.

News feed: Plans for Earthquake warning system (BBC News)

‘Researchers say they have found a close link between electrical disturbances on the edge of our atmosphere and impending quakes on the ground below’

According to Nasa scientists, there is a change in the atmosphere before an earthquake occurs. They even detected this change before the big earthquake in China in May. It may be possible that in the future, there will be a satellite just to predict when the next earthquake will occur.

and that would be plain awesome...

今週のGrammar – 04: ‘too big for one’s boots’

He is being too big for his boots. –
