Akbarat is a case manager who facilitates ART clients' successful treatment. At age 17, after she received a certificate of machine technology, Akbarat applied for a job at the textile factory. The man in charge registered her and promised to give her a job, but instead, took advantage of her and raped her. In shock, she hid what had happened to her from family and friends. A few years later, she started having swelling as well as dermatological and abdominal problems, and she also found out that the man had died. She decided to check her HIV status—it was positive. By refusing to be defeated by the horrific incident, Akbarat has been an example to HIV+ patients by demonstrating adherence to treatment and encouraging other to learn about their status. Currently, Akbarat lives with her husband and three-year-old daughter who are both negative.
